This question is about comprehensive benefits packages.
Unlimited PTO means that employees are allowed to take all the time off that they need or as little time as they want. In theory, this means an employee can take off as much time as they'd like throughout the year.
Unlimited PTO focuses on the idea that so long as all tasks are getting completed, you can take off time whenever and however long you want. While this may sound simple, there are levels of complexity with unlimited PTO, especially because almost every business handles it differently.
While unlimited PTO sounds like you can just take off a day any time you choose, this is often untrue. Just like traditional PTO, jobs with unlimited PTO generally require you to still submit requests so that the company knows when you are in and out of the office. If you are not completing your work, these requests can be denied.
There are unwritten rules with unlimited PTO. These vary from company to company but often include things such as making sure you aren't taking off time when other people are taking it off, as well as making sure you are only taking off a reasonable number of days.
