What is a bear hug in business?

By Zippia Team - Sep. 7, 2022

A bear hug in business is an aggressive tactic in which a potential acquirer offers to buy a publicly listed company for a significantly higher price than what the company is actually worth. This offer is made at a price that exceeds what other potential acquirers are willing to pay.

This strategy is employed chiefly to eliminate any competition in the buying of a company. It also makes it very difficult for the target company's management to reject the offer.

This is done publicly without the consent of the target company's board of directors. It seeks to convince shareholders of the target company to put pressure on the board of directors to either accept the offer or enter into negotiations.
