What is a project grant?

By Zippia Team - Jan. 8, 2023

A project grant is official funding and support given to a specific connected set of activities that have a beginning and end stage, clear objectives, and a predetermined cost. Project grants involve sums of money that are given to particular projects or for the production of a specific deliverable.

Project grants are given out by local, state, and federal governments. In most cases, a project grant is awarded to a company or contractor based on merit. There are many different types of project grants, some deal with education, while others deal with large-scale works, such as infrastructure projects.

Two types of educational project grants include:

  • Federal Pell Grants

  • National Endowment for the Humanities

In terms of infrastructure, many project grants are given out by the United States Department of Transportation. The Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) also awards competitive project grants for multimodal freight and highway projects that have regional or national significance.

INFRA grants are typically meant for projects that improve the efficiency, safety, and reliability of the movement of commercial freight carriers, and private citizens using automobiles across rural and urban roadways.
