Investor relations is a department or division of a company that provides investors with information about its corporate dealings. This department is important in creating and maintaining healthy investor relationships.

As the go-between of the executive leadership of a company and its investors, relations professionals are responsible for all communications between the two groups. This communication may be shareholder meetings or press conferences announcing quarterly gains or the publishing of SEC filings and regulations that may impact the company. Investor relation professionals are also responsible for delivering news to investors related to any crisis that has impacted the company.

Current and potential investors need to have an accurate picture of a company's financial strength. Much like a public relations professional works to control the message that a company puts out connected to a product or service, investor relations specialists do the same for those invested financially in their company's future.
