What is the career path for a sonographer?
The career path for a sonographer includes jobs as a sonographer, sonography educator, and supervising sonographer. Sonographers complete formal training during a DMS program. During this program, they often focus on two or three specialties within sonography. This can be helpful for making yourself more marketable while job searching.
Most sonographers first begin working in general sonography. You may choose to pursue certification for specializations, such as obstetrics, and then become more focused on one specific type of sonography. From there, sonographers can move up their career path based on experience and certifications.
Some sonographers can move on to become lead sonographers or supervising sonographers. These positions require past experience in sonography. In this role, you still perform sonograms while overseeing a team of sonographers under you.
Should you choose to, you can move on to a department manager or director role. This role generally focuses more on administrative work and less on performing sonograms. Often, these roles require additional education such as a bachelor's or master's degree.
Some experienced sonographers may choose to become sonography educators. In this role, people are able to take their past experiences and teach aspiring sonographers.
