What is the career path for an occupational therapist?

By Zippia Team - Jan. 8, 2023

The career path for an occupational therapist involves jobs as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), physical therapist, and occupational therapist. The roles other than an occupational therapist include other backgrounds in terms of education and licensure.

Occupational therapists are highly trained medical professionals. Fully licensed occupational therapists must earn a master's degree in occupational therapy. This can be accomplished in the most expedient fashion (around five years) by combining an undergraduate degree program with an occupational therapy master's program.

Occupational therapists must complete supervised fieldwork after their education. Master's degree holders need 24 hours of supervised fieldwork, while doctoral degree holders must complete 16 hours of supervised fieldwork. Next aspiring occupational therapists must pass an examination to gain licensure.

The exam is administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).

Most occupational therapists enter their careers and keep the job title of an occupational therapist. However, this does not mean that their careers stagnate. Occupational therapy is a constantly evolving field, so professionals within it are constantly learning new skills, methods, and knowledge.

Here are some other possible roles for those in the occupational therapy field:

  • Occupational Aide

  • Occupational Assistant

  • Physical Therapist

  • Physical Therapy Assistant

  • Physical Therapy Aide

  • Rehabilitation Services Coordinator

  • Athletic Trainer
