What is the career path for radiology?

By Zippia Team - Dec. 9, 2022

The career path for radiology begins with completing a four-year medical degree and then a three-year residency. After completion, radiologists need to complete a fellowship to have specific training in a sub-field of radiology. Fellowships tend to last a year or so.

There are different subfields for radiology, such as breast radiology, where the radiologist reads and diagnoses mammograms, breast ultrasounds, biopsies, and breast MRIs.

These subfields allow radiologists to be extremely skilled in one specific area of radiology. Some radiologists may not choose to go into a subfield but work in general radiology.

Radiologists do not have much career growth, specifically as radiologists, because once they complete their education, they generally reach the peak of their career growth.

Depending on where they work, they could choose to work as the head of the radiology department, which would allow for more management and responsibility.
