What is the difference between a cover letter and a resume?

By Zippia Team - Jul. 31, 2023

The difference between a cover letter and a resume is that a cover letter is a more personal and detailed document explaining why you want a job. And why you think you are a prime candidate for that job. While, a resume is more of a technical document listing your work experience, education history, relevant skills, awards and achievements, and any other relevant work-related information.

Another key distinction is that in a cover letter you have the opportunity to give your potential employer a taste of your personality.

Cover letters should also include information on the company or business you are seeking a job at. This demonstrates that you've done your research and shows your interest in the position.

Resumes, on the other hand, are not documents that give much of an indication of your personality, nor do they contain any information about the company you are applying for a job at.
