What is the difference between a Ph.D. and a doctorate?

Although these terms are often used interchangeably in academics, a doctorate and a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) are not the same, as a Ph.D. is a subcategory of a doctorate degree. In basic terms, all PhDs are doctorates, but all doctorates are not necessarily PhDs.

A doctorate is any advanced degree that gives you the title of doctor. Someone with an MD (Medical doctor) will hold a doctorate degree, but will not necessarily hold a Ph.D. A Ph.D. is a doctorate given for doing research, so generally, it is awarded to people who have done research in the field along with their education.
