What is tokenism?

By Zippia Team - Feb. 1, 2023

Tokenism refers to the act of including or hiring a person from a minority with the sole intention of preventing criticism, and somewhat falsely, giving the appearance that the organization treats minorities or disenfranchised groups fairly and equitably.

Many organizations use tokenism to dissuade criticisms from specific communities or from the industry in which they operate. They might use tokenism by hiring a specific amount of a minority group to meet a workplace diversity quota. While the end result can be somewhat good, the intentions of the organization in terms of tokenism are cynical and selfish.

Tokenism should not be mistaken for inclusion. Tokenism is actually considered another form of discrimination that takes place in the corporate world and in other industries and sectors as well. Tokenism also normally sees the members of minority groups being hired at organizations, but then not receiving fair treatment in terms of opportunity and pay.
