What qualifications do you need to be a lab technician?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 10, 2021

Qualifications you need to be a lab technician include degrees, certification, and in some cases, licensure.

Completing an accredited medical laboratory technician degree program is required. Candidates can find MLT programs at four-year institutions and community colleges. This is a two-year associate's degree in the field of medical lab technology. Some schools offer accelerated programs that can be completed in 65 to 75 weeks.

In addition to earning your MLT degree, candidates often choose to become certified by one of the major entities that oversee the field. The American Society for Clinical Pathology and American Medical Technologists both offer certification. While not required, many employers will only hire certified technologists.

Some states require that medical lab technologists be licensed. Currently, twelve states, including New York and California, need technologists to be approved.
