A sterile processing technician, or sterile processing tech, is a health care professional who performs sterilization processes in the surgical environment. A sterile processing technician must know how to use specialized equipment, such as an autoclave, to ensure all surgical instruments and materials are sterile and safe to use on the patient.
Around 30% of sterile processing technicians have their two-year associate's degree in sterile processing. If two years is too much time, there are also accelerated sterile processing programs that last as little as 42 weeks or around ten months.
The main requirements for being a sterile processing technician are:
High school diploma or equivalent
Current licensure as a Sterile Processing Technician (IAHCSMM and CBSPD)
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Prior relevant experience in a health care environment
Ability to repeatedly lift up to 25 pounds
