What qualifications do you need to work in a lab?

By Zippia Team - Oct. 12, 2021

The qualifications you need to work in a lab vary depending on the state and the specific employer. Some states and employers have very specific requirements while others are less so.

There are twelve states that require anyone working in a lab as a technician to hold a certification in the field of Laboratory Technology. To earn this certification, a candidate must have an associate's degree from an approved program and pass the certification exam. Montana, in addition to certification, requires all technicians to take an additional fourteen hours of education to maintain their license. Other states like New York require all technicians hold a bachelor's degree in lab technology but they do not require certification.
