When do you capitalize a job title?
You capitalize a job title immediately preceding the name when used as part of the name. For example, "We asked Chairperson Johnson to join us at the town hall meeting." versus "We asked Mr. Johnson, chairperson of the board, to join us at the town hall meeting."
When deciding whether or not to capitalize a job title, keep the following general rules and guidelines in mind:
Before their name: Capitalize a job title that comes immediately before a person's name or is used as part of their name when addressing them
After their name: If the job title comes after the person's name or is used instead of the person's name, it is generally not capitalized
Abbreviations: The rule of capitalization applies to abbreviations, too. So General Davidson would be written as Gen. Davidson
