Where do firefighters work?
Firefighters work at fire stations that are federally or state-owned, only during emergencies, at airports, chemical plants, or industrial sites. With the exception of part-time volunteer firefighters, most first responders live and work in fire stations for extended periods of time. Shifts typically last for 24 hours, with a total of 9 and 11 shifts a month.
Beyond fire stations, firefighters can be hired to reside on-site in case something goes wrong. An airport firefighter, for example, works at a municipal or international airport just in case they are needed to respond to emergency calls and complete evacuations of endangered aircraft.
Members of the airport firefighter division must complete specialized training that qualifies them to handle the challenges that occur during aircraft fire incidents.
There are several states that have adopted an almost all volunteer firefighter team. States like Delaware, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and North Dakota have fire departments composed of over 96% volunteers.
There are also wildfire firefighters who are called to volunteer whenever there is a major wildfire in the U.S. These firefighters are typically paid an hourly wage ($8 an hour) and flown out to help fight the wildfire despite this being one of the most dangerous firefighting jobs.
