This question is about what a respiratory therapist does.

Where do respiratory therapists work?

By Zippia Team - Sep. 7, 2022

Respiratory therapists work in general medical and surgical hospitals, outpatient care centers, and nursing care facilities. While they may work in any of these environments, 71.8% of respiratory therapists work in general medical and surgical hospitals.

In contrast, only 5.8% of respiratory therapists work in outpatient care centers, and only 5% of respiratory therapists work in nursing care facilities. Just 3% work in hospital settings other than general medical and surgical hospitals.

In all these environments respiratory therapists find themselves working alongside and collaborating with doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals.

In these environments, respiratory therapists spend their time conducting, performing, and analyzing diagnostic and function tests to determine lung capacity and ability, collaborating with physicians and nurses to create patient treatment plans. They also treat patients with aerosol medications and chest physiotherapy and evaluate the progress of a patient's treatment.
