Where does a tax manager work?

By Zippia Team - Jan. 22, 2022

A tax manager can work either in a specific company, for an accounting firm, or work for themselves. Tax managers are primarily responsible for accurately preparing and filing state and federal tax documents and can do so in a variety of work environments.

In addition to preparing and filing taxes, tax managers also develop tax strategies and policies that help the client or business maintain compliance with local and federal tax laws and regulations. Lastly, tax managers work to identify tax problems and propose solutions.

In order to be a successful tax director, individuals must demonstrate critical thinking, strong accounting skills, and leadership qualities. The position blends management with tax expertise, so it usually requires professionals to have plenty of industry experience as well as some prior management experience.

Due to the nature of the position, tax directors need to have a comprehensive understanding of tax compliance. Tax directors should have a firm understanding of all federal, state, and local tax laws that apply to their industry. These professionals must also know regulations for their specific industries.

In addition, tax directors must have expert accounting skills. Most tax directors begin their careers as accountants and gain work experience auditing and filing tax reports. This experience allows tax directors to understand the complexities of tax preparation and make a final review of tax returns.

Everyone working in accounting, including tax directors, must have an expert level of understanding of Microsoft suite programs, particularly Microsoft Excel. Tax accounting information lives on spreadsheets, and tax directors spend large portions of their days filling out, analyzing, and editing spreadsheets.
