This question is about medical surgical staff nurse certifications.

Which medical surgery certification is better?

By Zippia Team - Jan. 8, 2023

The Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) certification is slightly better than the Registered Nurse-Board Certified (RN-BC) certification.

The main contributing factor to this is that the CMSRN certification is endorsed by a specialty nursing organization, while the RN-BC is not. The Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) certification is endorsed by the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN).

The CMSRN certification is valid for five years before the need for renewal. It requires at least 2,00 hours of professional practice within the last three years. The exam is computer-based, and the application fee is $375.

Another reason the CMSRN is slightly better than the RN-BC is that it applies to more types of practices, including:

  • Clinical

  • Management

  • Education

While the RN-BC only applies to clinical or direct clinical supervision.
