Why do entry-level jobs require experience?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 16, 2022

There are many reasons why entry-level jobs require experience, such as narrowing an applicant pool and industry qualifications. When posting a job on a career site, employers must write how many years of experience are required. Often, if they put zero, they will be flooded with applications that don't match the skills needed.

Adding an experience requirement can help to narrow down an applicant pool for applicants that do hold skills necessary for the exact position. It is also important to note that many times, a company may waive those experience requirements if a candidate has a strong resume with good applicable skills.

Some industries will require experience and specific skills that are gained through that experience before beginning work. Oftentimes, the required experience can be gained through senior projects or internships. You may need to find a job in a related field to first gain the experience necessary to be successful in your eventual target career.
