Why isn't Easter a federal holiday?

By Zippia Team - Feb. 1, 2023

Easter is not a federal holiday because it always falls on a Sunday. Sunday is a non-working day for federal and state employees. Because of this, there is no need for Easter to be a federally mandated closure. Many companies that are not run by the federal or state government are also closed on Easter in observance of the holiday.

Although Easter is not a federal holiday, it is still celebrated by the US government. For example, the president of the United States holds an annual easter egg hunt on the White House lawn for children to collect eggs and celebrate the holiday. While it is a traditionally Christian holiday, the easter egg hunt is not directly related to Christianity.
