Belfast, Maine history

The current Belfast Coat of Arms dates from 30 June 1890 when the Ulster King of Arms made a Grant of Arms to the new city of Belfast.

Alfred Brumwell Thomas of London won the competition to design the new bilding and work began in 1896.

Sir Alfred Brumwell Thomas was commissioned as the architect for the project; ground was broken in 1898 and took eight years to complete.

Doctor Larmour used pictures to point out the details on the internal facades such as the pediments over doorways, the oval windows and the mouldings, Rainwater heads in lead had angels’ heads and the date 1904.

The city hall in Durban, South Africa is almost an exact replica of Belfast's City Hall. It was built in 1910 and designed by Stanley G. Hudson, who was inspired by the Belfast design.

Thomas even designed the chairs etc to fit in with the architecture. It was destroyed during the Belfast Blitz in 1941.

The Belfast City Hall has stood tall for over a century now, and marked its 100th birthday in August of 2006 with a family picnic day on the open grounds.

In 2009 the building reopened following its 11 million refurbishments after two years of work.
