City of Erie company history timeline

1800

Erie County was formed in the 1800’s after Pennsylvania purchased the Erie Triangle from the United States Government in 1792 for approximately $151,000.

1801

Presque Isle is a French term that means peninsula, or "almost an island".The City of Erie was established in 1795 and became a port in 1801.

1812

Construction of a naval fleet during the War of 1812 to gain control of the Great Lakes from the British were built in Erie.

1813

Naval yards established on Presque Isle Bay built most of the fleet that was used by Oliver Hazard Perry to defeat the British at the Battle of Lake Erie (September 10, 1813). Perry’s reconstructed flagship, the United States Brig Niagara, is berthed at the foot of Holland Street.

In 1813, Commodore Oliver Perry defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Erie, helping define our tenacity when Perry raised the flag emblazoned with the dying words of American Naval Officer James Lawrence, "Don't Give up the Ship," at the Battle.

1818

One, called the Erie Land Lighthouse, is the oldest land lighthouse on the Great Lakes and was built in 1818.

1823

Reverend Jeptha Van Valkenburg (founder of Erie) born in Schoharie County, New York in 1823.

After an 1823 fire destroyed that building, a second, similar structure was built near the same site.

1870

In 1870, he was granted a United States Homestead Patent on the property and began building a permanent farmhouse.

1871

The original plat for Erie was filed in 1871, following the establishment of the Briggs Mine, the first commercial coal mine in Weld County.

In 1871, the Boulder Valley Railroad, building off the Denver Pacific line, laid track to the new town of Erie, some 20 miles north of Denver, and stimulated renewed development of the Northern Coalfield.

1872

The other light, built in 1872, is located on Presque Isle — which is not an island, but a sand spit peninsula in Lake Erie.

1874

The Town of Erie was incorporated in 1874.

Erie's first school is established in 1874; 33 students enrolled.

1876

Erie's first jail is built in 1876.

1878

In 1878, the Knights of Labor Local #771, the first mining labor union in Colorado, chartered in Erie.

1881

In 1881, Erie's first Lincoln School building, and second official school, is built at Holbrook and Wells Streets.

1883

In 1883, Erie's first church, Welsh Presbyterian Church, was built.

1888

In 1888, the United Methodist Church is built and dedicated.

1889

In 1889, the building was expanded north and east, with a large courtroom added on the second floor.

1912

1912: Coal miners achieve an eight-hour work day.

1913

Another reconstruction was made, following the specifications of the original ship and using a few of the timbers recovered in 1913.

1914

1914: Ludlow, Colorado sees a gun battle waged and one soldier and four miners are killed.

1927

In 1927, the Washington mine opens.

1929

Up to the time the new 7-12 grade high school was built in 1929, this building was used by all twelve grades.

1933

In 1933, local coal mines reopened.

1935

In 1935, the High School boys' basketball team plays in the State Tournament for the first time, but unfortunately lose.

1966

The Erie Elementary School was built in 1966.

1980

Edward Wellejus, Chronicle of a Great Lakes City (Woodland Hills, CA: Windsor Publications, 1980).

1984

The Erie Historical Society was founded in 1984 to preserve Erie's history.

2005

In 2005, Erie High School opens and is located on the northeast corner of Erie Parkway and County Line Road 5.

2020

The board will have an official website for all information moving forward, by the end of 2020.

2021

Erie Lighthouse Tours - The Erie Land Lighthouse opened to the public summer 2021 for the first time in the historic site’s history.
