City of La Porte company history timeline

1892

La Porte began as a city in 1892 when real estate speculators from the north advertised the land as being ideal for agriculture such as citrus.

Established in 1892, La Porte, Texas is the oldest incorporated town in East Harris County, and with age comes great stories.

1909

Education space was borrowed from a neighborhood Baptist Church, but that all changed in 1909, when the La Porte school trustees established a new school on the north-side of the city.

1922

The La Porte Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1922 at a meeting at Dudley’s Café at Sylvan Beach Park.

1923

The organization was incorporated and chartered in March, 1923 by E.A. Johnson, H.B. Harrison, and A.T. Seaman.

1930

An excursion train brought patrons from Houston to La Porte each day to visit Sylvan Beach Park, the “playground of the South.” Famous orchestras and film stars provided entertainment throughout the summers until 1930.

1931

In time, the plant continued to grow and eventually was purchased by Allis-Chalmers in 1931.

1972

In 1972, the Chamber had its name changed to La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce in order to include the cities of La Porte, Morgan’s Point, Shoreacres, and Lomax.

1983

Although Rumely-Allis Chalmers Manufacturing plant closed in 1983, its mark on La Porte’s history will not be forgotten and can still be appreciated at the Rumely Allis-Chalmers La Porte Heritage Center, located adjacent to the LaPorte County Fairgrounds.

2018

Through the combined efforts of the La Porte Community Civic Club and the City of La Porte, the building has been completely rebuilt and once again took center stage in the community as it was dedicated on Saturday, July 21, 2018 as a museum and historical site.
