City of Saginaw company history timeline

1812

Immediately after the War of 1812, the American Fur Company established a trading post on the west side of the Saginaw River.

1819

In 1819, a permanent settlement was established, and families began to arrive in Saginaw.

1822

In 1822, Fort Saginaw was built at what is now Court and Hamilton Streets.

In 1850 Norman Little built a plank road from Flint to Saginaw. It was three years later, in 1822, that Fort Saginaw was established, only to be abandoned the next year by the military.

1835

Saginaw, city, seat (1835) of Saginaw county, east-central Michigan, United States It lies at the head of navigation on the Saginaw River (leading to Saginaw Bay in Lake Huron), about 100 miles (160 km) northwest of Detroit.

1836

Then, in 1836, Saginaw City, population 400, was founded by Norman Little.

1837

1837 saw the first school district organized.

1839

In 1918 'The Peninsular' automobile was produced at Washington and 6th Street. It was located on Court St, near the courthouse, which itself was built in 1839.

1850

In 1850 Norman Little built a plank road from Flint to Saginaw.

1854

Due to infusions of capital by Jesse Hoyt of New York, residents flourished on the eastern side of the Saginaw River as well and East Saginaw was incorporated as a village in 1854.

1855

The value of the land’s forests was heavily publicized by Norman Little and in 1855 there were 23 sawmills in the area producing a hundred-million board feet of lumber a year.

1883

The library was made possible by a gift of $100,000 from Jesse Hoyt in 1883, plus additional funds afterward.

1905

1905 gave us the first car produced in Saginaw (at N. Washington and 6th Street); the Ranier.

1918

In 1918 'The Peninsular' automobile was produced at Washington and 6th Street.

1927

Two trucks were produced in Saginaw, Nelson Brothers Motor Truck Co. and Ruggles Truck, in Carrollton.In 1927 Saginaw Airport Co. formed the first commercial airfield on Janes Road.

1957

The two landmasses have been connected since 1957 by “Big Mac,” the 5-mile (8-km) Mackinac Bridge across the Straits of Mackinac, which separate Lake Michigan on the west from Lake Huron on the east.
