Transmission System Operator

Transmission System Operators play a critical role in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the Bulk Electric System (BES). In this role, you will take and/or direct timely real-time actions to maintain system reliability during both normal and emergency conditions. Operators monitor system elements, respond to disturbances, support field personnel, and help maintain voltage and power flow across the transmission network. You will utilize Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems to control equipment, prepare and execute switching orders, coordinate with internal/external stakeholders, and maintain accurate operational logs. This is a hands-on, operationally critical role with clear processes, structured training, and opportunities for growth.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor elements of the Bulk Electric System and respond to status changes, disturbances, and system events.
Make appropriate notifications during emergencies, weather events, and operational changes.
Utilize reactive resources to maintain voltage schedules and regulate power flows among interconnected entities.
Prepare and implement switching orders to safely isolate equipment for maintenance.
Provide clear verbal instructions to field personnel engaged in switching operations.
Control transmission and distribution equipment through SCADA systems.
Maintain detailed operational logs and reports for regulatory and internal compliance.
Support storm response and other emergency activities as needed.
Completion of the Dominion Energy System Operations qualification program within 18 months of hire/transfer.
Work Schedule
This position follows a structured 12-week rotational schedule:
4 days per week
14 night shifts per rotation
23-26 day shifts, depending on the occurrence of a long break
Scheduled training days included in each rotation
13-day unpaid break between rotations, with the option to pick up additional work during this period if desired
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Related experience in electrical, mechanical, operational, or utility environments (such as transmission operations, power generation, substation work, or industrial systems).

General Information:
The Office of Fixed Assets and Surplus Property at James Madison University is accepting applications for a part-time Computer Surplus Specialist. This is a part-time wage position with a flexible working schedule, working up to 29 hours per week. Work is conducted Monday-Friday between the hours of 7am and 5pm. The Computer Surplus Specialist is responsible for picking up surplus computer equipment from various locations on campus, updating departmental databases, and processing equipment for recycling or re-issue. The position provides superior customer service to university departments and external customers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Computer Surplus Specialist will work with the Fixed Assets and Surplus Property team to ensure the proper accounting for the surplus and disposition of the University's computer equipment.
The responsibilities of the Computer Surplus Specialist include but are not limited to:
Processing departmental surplus computer equipment forms in an Access database to create work orders and scheduling pickup of equipment from various locations on campus;
Verifying information on forms with items being picked up to ensure only approved items are surplused;
Using departmental van to pick up and transport surplus equipment to the warehouse for processing (from laptop, all-in-one and desktop computers to printers and servers);
Recording computer equipment receipts into a database for monthly reporting of surplused equipment to IT for updating their system;
Maintaining security of all equipment under the responsibility of Computer Surplus;
Processing equipment for recycling by entering information into spreadsheet manifest, palletizing equipment, shrink wrapping, and moving pallet to temporary storage area of warehouse;
Working with electronics recycler staff during scheduled appointment to ensure complete manifest of equipment is picked up;
Working with JMU IT to have newer technology computer equipment tested for possible re-issue to campus and recording equipment in departmental databases when re-issued to departments.
Completing departmental forms for transfers out of Computer Surplus;
Communicating regularly with Fixed Assets and Surplus Property staff and responding to email messages received through Computer Surplus departmental mailbox on daily basis;
Frequent customer interaction, both on the phone and in person;
Assisting with annual inventory of Computer Surplus equipment that is active in the fixed assets system; and
Assisting with Surplus Property special projects and sales as requested.

This is currently a hybrid position with two days onsite and three days remote. We are looking for self-starters who can independently explore and acquire knowledge and build informal support networks. Responsibilities include:
- Design, develop, and implement highly efficient computer vision algorithms and software primarily using Python and relevant libraries (e.g., OpenCV, NumPy, scikit-image).
- Apply deep learning techniques (e.g., CNNs, RNNs, Transformers) for object detection, segmentation, tracking, and recognition using frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch.
- Perform comprehensive image preprocessing and augmentation on large datasets of both 2D (standard images/video/X-rays) and 3D (e.g., volumetric data) data.

Skills and Requirements
- BS/BA and 12+ years or MS/MA/MBA and 9+ years or PhD/Doctorate and 7+ years (for SME) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with a specialization in Computer Vision or Biometrics.
