Essential Functions * Receives eight weeks of formalized pre-service security training at the Illinois Corrections Training Academy including firearms training due to requirements mandating qualification. * Receives on-the-job training under immediate supervision of a qualified correctional employee. The Detention Officer will perform activities to include, but not be limited to, the following: Shall be familiar with all statutory provisions regarding the operation of detention facilities. Shall provide supervision, guidance, care and secure custody consistent with Departmental policy and procedure, while promoting the philosophy and direction of the department. Shall demonstrate an understanding of the stages of adolescent development, transitional disorders, mental illness, and other issues that may affect detainee behavior. Shall maintain direct involvement with youth by being present on the detention floor. Shall encourage appropriate behavior of detainees through positive verbal communication. POSITION DESCRIPTION In accordance with the Mission and Values of Southwestern Illinois College, the Part-time Patrol Officer is a part-time commissioned officer (uniformed) position and is contingent upon external funds. The position is assigned shifts variably and expected to be available for primarily weekends, and holiday work, and occasional overtime. Part-time Patrol Officers are expected to perform collateral duties in an area of expertise/interest needed by the Department to fulfill its mission and AQIP initiatives. Enforces applicable policies, regulations and laws. Performs work of routine to complex difficulty in guarding and protecting life and property in buildings and on the grounds. Provides available services and assistance to the college community. Regulates the activities of the general public and other persons in the protection of property from fires, theft, vandalism, trespassing, and other hazards. Reports all pertinent information regarding actions occurring during a work shift. Position subject to background check and drug testing upon initial hiring and randomly thereafter. QUALIFICATIONS * High school diploma or GED required, college degree desirable. * A minimum of one-year experience in law enforcement, security, fire safety, or other emergency management services required, preferably in a college campus environment, is desirable. * Must be at least 21 years of age and a US Citizen. * No record or criminal convictions of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude. * Professional certifications in Security, Law Enforcement, Emergency Medical Services or other areas related to Public Safety desirable. * Possess a valid Driver's License.
