ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supervises inmates in county jail in accordance with established policies, regulations and procedures while assuming responsibility for all needs (physical, medical, etc.) of the prisoners during detention.
Performs various tasks associated with inmate admissions; books prisoners; reviews offense status and classification (violent, non-violent, etc.) to determine appropriate level of security and confinement.
Observes conduct and behavior of inmates to prevent disturbances and escapes; searches inmates and cells for contraband articles; patrols assigned areas for evidence of forbidden activities, infractions of rules and unsatisfactory attitudes or adjustment of prisoners, and reports observations to supervisor; performs inmate supervision during recreation and meal periods.
Inspects locks, grills, doors and gates for tampering; employs various forms of discipline as needed to maintain order among prisoners, if necessary.
Supervises prisoners in transit between jail, courtroom, prisons or other points, traveling by automobile or public transportation as required; locks prisoners in cell after searching for weapons, valuables or drugs.
Secures all valuables and/or belongings and follows standard procedures designated for the disposing or maintaining of the same; orders and serves meals to prisoners and provides or obtains medical aid if needed; administers medication as prescribed by doctor.
Prepares arrest records including reports, bookings, releases, fingerprinting and mug shot photography (identifying the prisoner and charge against him/her); assists in the maintenance of various records and information reporting materials and data base.
Supervises trustees or prisoners on general work details inside or outside of jail; performs general maintenance of jail facility and environs; repairs safety and security devices; cleans and sanitizes cells; maintains inmate recreation area and equipment.
Serves as bailiff; performs a variety of security tasks specific to maintaining courtroom order and insuring that courtroom processes are adhered to; serves as courtroom security officer by carrying out specific plans and programs to assure safety of court personnel and protection of facilities; follows specific instructions from appropriate supervisors.
Must be able to perform as a credible witness in a court of law.
Performs related duties as required.

PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES:
Enforce County laws, and State and Federal Statutes.
Maintain the security of the jail by ensuring that all inmates are adequately confined; monitor the safety of inmates, detainees, visitors and employees.

Proficiency in the operation of department vehicles under normal and adverse weather and road conditions. Proficiency in the use of firearms to the department standard. Ability both physically and psychologically to protect oneself and others in threatening situations. Ability to perform law enforcement duties requiring good judgment under pressure and good physical condition.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be in good health and in physical condition. Must possess adequate physical strength to drag an unconscious subject a distance of fifty feet across a smooth level surface. Must be able to climb and decent stairs quickly and repeatedly throughout a work shift.
Must have vision of 20-40 or better using both eyes, with eyeglasses or contact lenses if required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

POSSIBLE HEALTH RISKS SPECIFIC TO THIS POSITION:
This position has been determined to be an EXTREME exposure risk to "biohazards" associated with blood-borne pathogens HIV (aids), HAV (Hepatitis A) virus, HBV (hepatitis B) virus, and air-borne transmissions of TB (tuberculosis). Members are advised that exposure to a "biohazard" may result in severe illness or death. Members are required by Department policy to use protective equipment and clothing. Inoculation may be required to prevent or treat exposures to "biohazards". Continuously ensures safety and security of inmates, staff, visitors, and the public; facilitates and protects the Constitutional rights of all persons, including, but not limited to; access to medical and dental care, law library, religious activities, legal representation, and due process.
Directly, and indirectly, supervises inmate activities within housing units.
Observe inmates and maintain alertness to detect, deter, or prevent self-destructive or criminal behaviors including, but not limited to; suicide, escape, assault, theft, escape, criminal mischief, extortion, ethnic intimidation and introduction of contraband.

Ensures verbal and written directives, policy, and ordinances, of Weld County and the Sheriff, are consistently and uniformly applied, and that actual practices reflect these applications.
Provides basic intervention and applies conflict resolution strategies, to effectively control inmate behaviors and maintain order within the Weld County Jail.
Consistently and effectively enforces jail rules regulating inmate conduct through verbal counseling or accurate preparation of an infraction report to document a written warning, lockdown, or disciplinary request.
Works effectively in groups of peers and other employees; facilitates smooth transition of shifts through briefings, verbal, or written communication; provides support to Deputies assigned in housing units.
Works rotating shifts to meet deployment needs, which vary at times.
Conducts face and head counts, and reports results, to maintain the effective control of inmates; accurately confirms identity of inmates from booking photographs and name rosters to facilitate distribution of meals, commissary orders, and authorized inmate entry and exit from housing units.
Conducts strip, person, cell and area searches, to maintain effective control of inmates.
Escorts inmates from one location to another to provide for required inmate activities.
Executes emergency response and tactical plans, to maintain safety and security within the Weld County Jail for events including, but not limited to; hostage situations, natural disasters, fire, riot, requests for assistance, and electrical power failure.
Effectively applies physical control techniques and restraint devices according to procedure, whenever necessary, to maintain inmate control and order.
Allows only authorized entry and exit of secure jail perimeter and areas within the jail facility, and determines lawful authority to accept or release an inmate from the jail to maintain safety, security, and order within the Weld County Jail; obtains legible photograph and classifiable ten-prints of prisoners accepted for booking to accurately identify inmates.
