RECRUITMENT PROCESS
The Sheriff's Personnel Unit will screen all applications to identify qualified candidates. Those qualified applicants will be notified by email at least one week prior to testing date.
A written exam will be utilized to determine an applicant's ranking and placement on the eligibility list. If it is determined that you meet the minimum qualifications and are therefore eligible to participate, you will receive a link to schedule a written exam. The written and physical exams are scheduled for 12/11/2025 at 8am. Panel interviews will happen immediately following the physical and written exams. The next testings are tentatively scheduled for 1/8/2026 and 1/22/2026.
If you have taken the BSCC Adult CorrectionOfficer examination within twelve (12) months prior to the scheduled date of the examination, you may elect to transfer that examination score or sit for the examination again; you must contact Sheriff's Personnel prior to the scheduled exam date to request that your previous score be transferred. Per BSCC, you may not take the exam within 30 days of a previous written test administration. All applicants must participate in the physical abilities exam unless you have previously passed the exam within the past twelve (12) months; you must contact Sheriff's Personnel prior to the scheduled exam date to request that your previous physical ability exam be transferred.

Step 2: Physical Agility Exam and Oral Panel Interviews. Once you successfully complete the application process, you will be invited to the physical agility test (PAT) and oral interviews. A completed POST Personal History Statement must be provided at the time of the oral interview.
Step 3: Background Investigation - After successful passing of the PAT and oral interviews, eligible applicants will undergo an in-depth background investigation and polygraph examination.
Step 4: Sheriff's Interview / Conditional Job Offer: After successfully passing a background investigation, applicants at this state will be invited to a Captain's interview, then a Sheriff's interview. If applicants pass both the Captain's and Sheriff's interviews they will receive a conditional job offer pending the successful completion of a medical and psychological exam, and drug and alcohol test. Examples of Duties
Duties performed by our CorrectionalOfficers may include
* Receives arrestees at the jail; resolves the need for restraints and applies handcuffs, martin chain or leg irons as appropriate
* Escorts and books arrestees; conducts warrant checks, acquires fingerprints and searches personal property
* Moves inmates within the facility to various locations and transports inmates to outside facilities such as hospitals, court sessions, other jails, prisons, etc.
* Supervises pods, inspects cells, counts inmates, and searches cells and inmates for contraband and weapons and maintains security of the facility
* Responds to and deals with inmates exhibiting violent, irrational behaviors in an effective manner
Education and Experience Required
Level I/II:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Level I:
High school diploma or GED. Completion of additional coursework from an accredited college or university in law enforcement or a related field, and previous paid or volunteer experience in a law enforcement support setting is desirable.
Level II (in addition to the above):
Supplemental education from an accredited college or university, and training in peace officer and correctionalofficer standards and practices; and one year of experience at a level equivalent to the CorrectionalOfficer I classification in Nevada County.

A Sheriff's Correctional Deputy Cadet enters training to join the ranks of Sheriff's Correctional Deputies who, under supervision, maintain order and security of inmates within a detention facility, transport from the correctional facilities to and from court, medical facilities, and other locations within and outside the County, supervise a crew of inmates in work projects throughout the County, and assist in the correction of antisocial attitudes and behavior. The Sheriff's Office is proud of our diverse workforce, and we encourage women and ethnic minorities to apply.
After passing the exam and screening processes, candidates are eligible to be hired as a Sheriff's Correctional Deputy and attend an Adult Correctional Academy training program as trainee.
Agility Examination: Prior to appointment as a cadet, each candidate must pass an agility test as part of the examination process. The agility test consists of three timed events: 99-yard obstacle course, drag a 165-lb bag for 32 feet, and a 500-yard run.
When hired, Sheriff's Correctional Deputy Cadets enter a 13-week Adult Correctional Academy training program. Benefits include medical, dental, and life insurance programs. Your status as trainee pursuant to the Fair Labor Standard Act does not entitle you to overtime or holiday pay while attending the Academy.
After Academy graduation, Cadets are eligible to be sworn in as a regular Sheriff's Correctional Deputy at the start of the following pay period, and be considered probationary employees of the Sheriff's Office.
A 5% salary increase is given for satisfactory job performance six months after appointment as a Sheriff's Correctional Deputy at Step 1.
Newly appointed Sheriff's Correctional Deputies must successfully complete an 18-month probationary period during which they will be required to complete a training program under the supervision of a training officer. The County supplies all safety equipment, as provided by law.
Advanced in-service training is available at the department level and in cooperation with local schools, state and national agencies. Regular County policy on tuition reimbursement applies to Sheriff's Correctional Deputies.
Upon graduation from the Adult Correctional Academy, it is a condition of employment that newly appointed Sheriff's Correctional Deputies must sign a payroll deduction authorization form providing for deduction of union membership dues or an equivalent service fee. A thirty (30) calendar day cancellation period is provided.
Employment Standards
