SUMMARY: The primary purpose of the Corrections Officer position is to guard, observe and transport inmates. Officer enforces the rules and policies of the facility and insures that the safety and welfare of inmates and staff are safeguarded. This is a trainee position that involves required completion of academy and field training including closely supervised performance of corrections officer duties. The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Attends Training Academy to become a Certified Jailer. May, under close supervision, perform Corrections Officer duties, including: Booking, classifying, observing, transferring, transporting and releasing inmates with attention to the health, safety and security of other officers, inmates and the public. Conducts inspections, shakedowns, inmate searches and makes key checks. Conducts head counts of inmates. Completes, checks and processes official papers and documents. Intervenes and resolves crisis situations such as fights, fires and medical emergencies. Restrains combative inmates. Serves or supervises the serving of meals to inmates. Supervises inmates while they are performing their cleaning duties. Provides informal counseling to inmates. Conducts safety inspections and inspections of fire exits. Assists with the personal needs of inmates, such as telephone calls, mail, laundry, visits and commissary. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Does not supervise any employees directly. However, is involved in the direct supervision of the activities of from one to 58 inmates at a time. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include addressing complaints and resolving problems. QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: May include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Patrols an assigned area, generally by vehicle, to prevent crimes and enforce laws and regulations. Responds to emergency calls and routine complaints and takes action as necessary. Issues traffic citations and directs traffic. Investigates traffic accidents and crimes against persons and property and assists federal, state and local law enforcement officials. Keeps records of activities and makes reports concerning crimes, complaints, accidents and investigations. Files cases with district attorney, U. S. attorney, or county attorney. Serves felony, misdemeanor and mental commitment warrants and makes arrests. Serves court papers including writs, summons, subpoenas, capias, etc. Questions witnesses and suspects and takes statements and depositions. Assists other law enforcement agencies as needed. Performs surveillance of suspects and assigned locations. Handles and cares for dogs involved in narcotics investigations. Conducts background investigations on applicants for law enforcement and corrections positions. Serves as a bailiff in county and district courts. Gathers and labels evidence, takes photographs and fingerprints, guards and transports prisoners and testifies in court. May meet with informants and conduct undercover narcotics work. May address and work with community groups to promote good public relations and to inform citizens of police activities and crime prevention. May be responsible for animal control, especially relating to cattle on roadways. Brings back people who have been arrested in other locations in and out of state.
