As a Reserve Harbor Patrol Officer, you'll be responsible for everything from boater assistance and emergency response to maintaining our waterfront facilities and boats. You'll also be a key source of information and assistance to the general public, so strong communication skills are a must!

WHAT YOU WILL DO
As a Harbor Patrol Officer or Harbor Crew member, you will perform a wide variety of public services, including patrolling the Morro Bay harbor and waterways, beaches, and parking areas; enforcing local and state laws regulating boating operations, public safety, boater assistance, emergency response including medical aid and firefighting, maintenance of City waterfront facilities and boats, marine wildlife assistance, information and assistance to the general public and related work as required. This job is enhanced by the collaboration with other agencies, including the Coast Guard, Police, Fire, State Parks, and Fish and Wildlife. The experience you draw from this ever-changing environment is vast and filled with a sense of being a part of the waterfront community. Every day is different at this job. THE HARBOR TEAM
We are an energetic, close-knit team that together meets the ever-changing challenges of the Harbor and waterfront activities. The Department consists of a Harbor Director, a Harbor Business Coordinator, a Harbor Patrol Supervisor, 4 Harbor Patrol Officers plus Reserve Officers, a part-time office assistant, and Beach Lifeguards.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
Forget monotony when you join the tight-knit Morro Bay Harbor Patrol team. You may start our morning by welcoming a sailboat to the Morro Bay Harbor and assisting them with slip or mooring rental. After an hour of physical training (swimming, paddling, running, etc.), you get a call for an overturned kayaker. Once the kayaker is brought to safety, you assist the Marine Mammal Center in capturing a sick sea lion on the beach. Later that day you are called by a fishing boat with engine trouble a couple miles outside the Harbor. You and your partner tow the boat back to the harbor averting the potential for injury or property damage. Patrol hours are approximately sunrise to sunset, so you head home to dinner with your family and friends, where you talk about how you and your fellow Harbor Patrol Officers made Morro Bay a safer place.

The Physical Agility Test consists of four (4) events as follows:
* 550 Yard Run
* Push-Ups

All events are scored individually, however, points are cumulative for these exercises. If you are less successful in one event, you can make up points in other events by completing more repetitions. More information is listed below in regard to each event and scoring.
Event 1 - 550 Yard Run: 165 seconds or less target time.
Event 2 - Push-Ups: Two (2) minute max time limit for as many as you can do with proper form. During the exercise you can only rest in "plank" position; plank must have proper form; knees cannot touch the ground.
Event 3 - Sit-Ups: Two (2) minute max time limit for as many as you can do with proper form. During the exercise, arms must be behind the head or crossed over the chest; candidate can rest in up position.
Event 4 - Pull-Ups: Must attempt at least one (1) unassisted rep starting in "hang" position; candidate can rest in "hang" position. Note: If you attempt the pull-up and are not able to complete it, you do have that ability to make up those points with the push-ups and sit-ups.
Since one of the events involves running, you can prepare for the test by practicing both short sprints and longer runs.
The other three events involve upper body and core strength. It is possible to condition yourself for these by doing similar total body exercises.
As mentioned above, scores are cumulative for all events. The scoring system below can be used to determine different exercise combinations that will yield a passing score for the physical agility exam. Hours:
* This position is scheduled to work three 12-hour shifts in a week and one 8-hour shift every other week. The shifts are scheduled as either 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. or 7 p.m. - 7 a.m.

Working Conditions:

Reporting to the University Police, Lead Parking Supervisor, the Parking Officer will patrol campus on foot, bicycle, and/or by vehicle to provide enforcement of campus parking rules and regulations including issuing citations, immobilizing and impounding vehicles, directing traffic and assisting police with traffic accidents and emergency calls for service, assist with university events, providing parking information and general university information to visitors, guests, students, staff and faculty.
This is a temporary, one year position with possibility of extension. The position works an intermittent hourly schedule that is provided ahead of time.
Department Summary
