Dare County company history timeline

1870

Dare County was established in 1870 and is named in honor of Virginia Dare, the first English child to be born in America.

The fifth township, Nags Head, consisted of all of Roanoke Island as well as the north banks from Oregon Inlet to the south edge of the community of Kitty Hawk. It was nearly 100 years later, in 1870, that the General Assembly voted to take away these parts of Currituck, Hyde, and Tyrrell to form a new county.

1874

In 1874, the United States Lifesaving Service was begun by building a chain of seven lifesaving stations along the Outer Banks, at the points of greatest danger to ocean going vessels.

1880

Richard Etheridge became America's first black lifesaving station keeper with his appointment to the Pea Island post in 1880.

1902

In 1902, Reginald Fessenden made the first application of a successful, commercially adaptable technique of radio communications in North America and perhaps the entire world.

On December 17, 1903, two brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, made the first successful flights in motor-driven, heavier-than-air machines, thus ushering in the age of human flight.

1905

After leaving North Carolina, Fessenden went on to establish the first commercial Trans-Atlantic two-way radio-telegraph service in 1905, two years before the world renowned Marconi.

1906

Then, in 1906, Fessenden's station in Massachusetts broadcasted the world's first radio program for entertainment.

1940

On March 1 1940, the Dare County Board of Commissioners appointed a committee to acquire property and begin planning for the construction of a publicly owned airport.

Late in 1940, an ambitious project was started – “traveling libraries” – the forerunner of a modern bookmobile.

1941

Following the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the United States Navy considered a Naval Auxiliary Air Station at Cape Hatteras.

1942

On July 27, 1942, a mass flight of Civil Air Patrol aircraft left Charlotte, Asheville, Elkin and Winston-Salem for Skyco Airport on Roanoke Island with direct orders not to land at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station under construction on the north end of the Island.

1943

The facility was opened as a Naval Auxiliary Air Station (NAAS) and officially commissioned on March 3, 1943.

In early April 1943, a squadron of F4U Corsairs came to NAAS Manteo.

2002

In December 2002, the Dare County Library Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit is incorporated.
