Job Title: Director of Mechanical Engineering Location: Roanoke, VA (On-site, with regular travel to multiple U.S. plants) About the Role Virginia Transformer Corporation is seeking a hands-on Director of Mechanical Engineering to lead the mechanical design and development function across six manufacturing plants. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise in mechanical systems, metallurgy, and polymers, along with strong leadership experience in custom electromechanical equipment design. This role will be responsible for standardizing design practices, improving manufacturability, and ensuring all mechanical designs meet rigorous standards of quality, performance, and safety. You will collaborate closely with plant-level engineering teams, corporate R&D, sourcing, and vendor quality to drive innovation, consistency, and cost optimization across the organization. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Strategy Lead, mentor, and develop a team of mechanical design engineers across multiple sites, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement. Ensure consistent application of the mechanical design manual and design standards across all six plants. Partner with corporate R&D to advance new mechanical design initiatives and introduce innovative materials, features, and product enhancements. Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for the design teams, driving measurable improvement in design quality, efficiency, and throughput. Design & Engineering Execution Oversee the design and development of mechanical assemblies, ensuring manufacturability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness. Provide direct, hands-on technical support when needed - including concept development, modeling, and problem-solving for complex design challenges. Apply deep understanding of metallurgy, polymers, and material properties to improve product performance, longevity, and thermal characteristics. Review and approve detailed mechanical drawings, design calculations, and documentation for accuracy and compliance with internal and industry standards. Cross-Functional Collaboration Partner with Sourcing and Vendor Quality Assurance to qualify suppliers and evaluate materials or components for new or alternative sourcing. Qualifications Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering, Master's degree in mechanical engineering preferred. PE is a plus. Minimum 15-20 years of experience in thermo-mechanical design of custom electromechanical equipment, with at least 5 years in a senior management or multi-site leadership role. Proven background in metallurgy, polymers, material science, or industrial product design from manufacturing, energy, aerospace, rail, or related industries. Strong knowledge of FEA/FEM analytical tools, CAD systems, and 3D design platforms (SolidWorks, Creo, or equivalent).     The Maintenance Engineer will manage and assist in the completion of the day-to-day activities involving the maintenance of the building/facility, equipment and machinery including HVAC, building lighting systems, production lines, grounds keeping, and overall facility appearance. Manage and coordinate the work of employees who repair and maintain building/facility, equipment, and machinery. Oversee engineering, design and installation phases of new equipment, line upgrades, and other capital projects. Manage the preventative/predictive maintenance and Maintenance Work Order Systems. Ability to create and manage budgets related to facility, repair, and labor. Work with Cornerstone's Core Values in mind: Safety, Integrity, Innovation and Teamwork. This position reports directly to the Plant Manager. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Responsible for communicating daily with all levels of employees in order to assist in resolving problems and achieving company goals. * Prepare work schedules, assign work, and oversees the work product. * Oversee construction and repair projects. * Manage the work order system designed to establish priority and control over maintenance requests from plant personnel. Ensures that work order requests are completed in a timely fashion. * Arranges for the procurement of outside contractors to carry out specific maintenance and repair assignments. * Adjusts maintenance programs to insure conformance with insurance policy requirements. * Coach, counsel and manage performance of direct reports. * Develop and maintain Preventive Maintenance Schedule program for applicable equipment and machinery. * Arrange for and manage, appropriate third-party contractor support, as needed. * Responsible for capital projects and cost control. * Prepare budgets and secure estimates and cost quotes as needed. * Enforce sound safety and housekeeping practices. * Manage spare parts inventory. * Communicate daily with the Plant Manager and internal personnel from Production and Quality Control in order to assist in resolving problems and achieving company goals. * Responsible for engineering, design and modification/installation of existing and/or new (capital) equipment. * Compiles and maintains drawing and records on plant facility. * Issues purchase orders. * Keeps equipment and work area clean and orderly. * Ensure compliance with federal and state laws. * Leads by example and imposes all safety and operational procedures; promote and ensure a safe working environment in compliance with company and regulatory standards by coaching and guiding associates on safety procedures and maintain compliance with established policies and procedures. * All other duties, as assigned. Qualifications * Associates Degree in related field, Bachelor's degree preferred * 5+ years of experience managing a Maintenance department in a manufacturing environment * 10+ years of maintenance experience * Knowledgeable in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and CMMS * Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) experience * Solid knowledge of schematics and blueprints. * Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. * Effective communication and people management skills.
