Ferguson Library company history timeline
Ferguson was widely known and highly honored for his devotion to education and at his death (December 9, 1877) he left by will the sum of $10,000 to found a Public Library.
1877: John Day Ferguson leaves a bequest of $10,000 to aid in the establishment of a public library on the condition that fellow citizens donate $25,000.
On January 29, 1880, the new library was named The Ferguson Library in honor of its farsighted benefactor, John Day Ferguson.
1882: The Library opens in Doctor Payne’s building on Atlantic Street.
C. E. Richardson, who, at her death in 1884, left to the Library real estate valued at $22,000.
1889: The Ferguson Library moves to the Geib property on Atlantic Street.

The Ferguson Municipal Public Library began as a volunteer community library in June 1930.
On June 1, 1930, the Ferguson Library opened with 575 books for its collection.
1930: Main Library expanded.
The Main Library building underwent its first expansion in 1930.

In the Spring of 1933, the Library went to the back of Deckmeyer’s Drug Store at 20 South Florissant Road.
1940: Bookmobile service begins.
The Ferguson Library began bookmobile service in 1940.
1954: Weed Memorial Branch opens in Springdale.
The library expanded again in 1961 with the addition of the balcony annex.
The library joined the Municipal Library Cooperative in 1966.
1967: Turn of River Branch opens in North Stamford.
The South End Branch opened in the South End Community Center in 1970.
1979: Expansion and renovation of Main Library begins.
Friends of the Ferguson library was incorporated in 1979.
1982: Second Main Library expansion completed.
People at public computer stations in 1987, the year the Ferguson Library Foundation was incorporated.
1988: Library begins circulating videocassettes.
In 1995 the library moved to its current location on Florissant Road.
1995: Ferguson becomes first public library in Connecticut to provide public Internet access.
The Missouri Research and Education Network upgraded the library’s data transmission line to a T1 connection in 1997, allowing fast Internet access.
1997: Purple Bus service begins.

Stamford High School Wall of Fame – Stamford High’s Wall of Fame was unveiled in 1998 to acknowledge graduates who have made a significant contribution to their field and to the community.
1999: Library begins circulating DVDs.
In 1999, a Starbucks opened at the Main Library.
The Harry Bennett Branch opened in 2000.
2004: Library introduces Wifi.
2007: Library celebrates 125th anniversary.
2008: Main Library renovation begins.
2010: South End Branch celebrates 40th anniversary.
2015: South End Branch celebrates 45th anniversary.
