The Plant Operations Foreman is responsible for planning, managing, and overseeing the daily operations of the wastewater treatment facility to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant performance. This role includes supervising operators, monitoring treatment processes, conducting process control testing, and ensuring adherence to regulatory standards. The Foreman also manages administrative duties, staff training, and equipment troubleshooting. While the position carries the same core technical and leadership responsibilities as a day-shift Foreman, it requires a higher level of independent decision-making and emergency response due to limited access to senior management and support staff.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
· Staff Supervision: Plan, schedule, assign, and evaluate the work of wastewater treatment plant operators and trainees.
· Operations Management: Direct daily plant operations, including flow management, biological process control, and equipment performance (pumps, filters, etc.). Ensure smooth communication and transition between shifts.
· Process Control: Monitor and adjust treatment processes; perform and/or direct wastewater sampling and testing to maintain optimal plant performance.
· Troubleshooting & Problem-Solving: Independently diagnose and resolve process or equipment issues, initiate corrective actions, and create work orders as needed.
· Regulatory Compliance: Ensure operations consistently meet all local, state, and federal requirements, including NPDES permits. Maintain accurate shift logs and support data reporting.
· Training & Development: Provide hands-on training, coaching, and performance feedback to staff, promoting a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Requirements
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience:
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.
Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in wastewater treatment operations and/or prior supervisory experience in the wastewater field.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Possession of an active Class 3 IEPA Wastewater Operator License, and the ability to obtain a Class 1 IEPA Wastewater Operator License within 12 months of hire.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of principles, practices, tools, and methods used in wastewater treatment plant operation.
Knowledge of safety regulations and safe working practices.
Ability to supervise, train, and evaluate staff.
