Since 1942—the year the GED test was first created — almost 20 million individuals have obtained their high school equivalency credentials.
The United States Armed Forces Institute examination staff first constructed the GED test in 1942.
By 1970, practically all 50 United States states had started to use the GED program for high school equivalency testing and over forty percent of all GED test-takers claimed their primary motivation to do so was obtaining a job.
The series was revised for the third time in 1988.
All mathematics questions were formerly in the multiple-choice form; in 2002, 20 percent require fill-in responses and students are allowed to use calculators.

The 2002 version also used written passages that were more relevant to adults.
The GED series currently used is the 2002 series, which is considered to be the most challenging series so far.
The current manifestation of the test itself was developed and is administered by Pearson after the company merged with ACE in 2011.
Most recently, a substantial revision was made in 2014 which brought the previous five subject tests down to four: Reasoning through Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.
