1806

Born in 1790 in Kentucky, John Sappington came to Missouri in 1806 with his father and 16 brothers and sisters.

1815

Sappington Road is one of the county’s oldest roads, originally serving to carry traffic to the tannery established in 1815 by John Sappington on land now part of the South County community bearing the Sappington name.

1836

A simple log cabin serving as a home for a farm family, the structure was remodeled for the first time in 1836, when an addition was made to its original two rooms.

1850

Prior, the family found it hard to keep their land around 1850 because, the American population was rapidly growing.

1858

George E. Leighton, had come to St Louis in 1858, and had but shortly afterward distinguished himself as an officer in the Union Army under General H. W. Halleck, successor to John Charles Fremont as Commander of the Army of the West.

1882

In 1882, however, the name Glendale served not only the railroad station and the surrounding neighborhood, but also a first-class boarding school for boys.

1884

In late 1884, with the goal of attracting settlers, Murphy approached Burgess A. Hadsell, a well-known colonizer for the German Reformed Church.

1885

In 1885 with the job finished, he watched the first water flowing through the canal.

1887

One of the settlements was the town sites of Glendale which started forming in 1887.

1888

In 1888 Murphy built Grand Avenue on a straight diagonal from Phoenix to Peoria, Arizona.

1890

Early development in the city began as early as 1890 with the establishment of churches and school.

1906

In 1906, the Beet Sugar Factory was built.

The city was first incorporated in 1906 and consisted an area of 1,486 acres.

1910

Encouraged by W. J. Murphy’s gift of land for a city park, the community incorporated as a town June 18, 1910.

1911

The Crystal open air picture show began its run in 1911 and The Rainbow Theatre soon followed.

1912

Glendale had its first newspaper by 1912, The Glendale News and Arizona saw statehood the same year.

First efforts to incorporate the area as a village were made in 1912, when a meeting was held at the home of H. F. Nichols, a member of the town’s first Board of Trustees.

1916

The City of Glendale, incorporated in 1916 as an exclusively residential city, has always been known for its gracious homes and its desirable qualities as a family community.

1920

In April, 1920, residents voted to exclude from Glendale the portion lying south of Lockwood Boulevard; in July of that same year, by an overwhelming majority of 32 to 2, they voted to reinstate the area.

That section, now separately incorporated as Oakland, was dropped from Glendale by election in 1920, and two subsequent efforts to reinstate it, again by election, have failed.

Although not a large area, it expanded tremendously till the 1920s.

The city continued to grow, and by 1920, it had grown to over 7,00 acres.

1921

Consequently, the growth had called for the establishment of a new form of government, and in 1921, voters endorsed a new city charter.

1923

The sanitarium, founded in 1923 to serve a female clientele, is a rare extant example.

1924

Glendale residents raised a record $275,000 in 1924 for this four-story Spanish Colonial Revival building.

1929

In 1929, Glendale produced its first promotional film on the efficiency of its government called the Glendale on Parade.

1930

The organization is so strong that the 1930 census higher percentage growth in the city as compared to other areas.

1932

Limits of the city were firmly established by 1932 and have remained settled ever since with boundaries of Manchester Road on the north, a line just south of Lockwood Boulevard on the south, and the city limits of Webster Groves and Kirkwood on the east and west.

1940

By 1940, the population had grown to nearly 5,000.

1942

It has served as Glendale's City Hall since its official opening in 1942.

1946

Founded in 1946 on the grounds of the deactivated airbase Thunderbird Field I, Thunderbird (a.k.a.

In 1946, Glendale started its first efforts to be incorporated together with the area it had annexed, but Milwaukee resisted these attempts.

1950

Glendale’s expansion gathered momentum in the 1950’s.

However, after a lengthy court battle, the city was incorporated in 1950 with a population of about 3,100 people.

By 1950, they had established several small annexations, which brought the area to 15,140.

1951

In 1951, construction topped $1 million.

1965

Glendale Community College has played a significant role in the development of our surrounding communities since our dedication in 1965.

1973

Founded in 1973, the Glendale Arizona Historical Society is a highly visible force in historic preservation in Glendale, Arizona.

1993

Designed by Arthur G. Lindley and Charles Selkirk, the City of Glendale bought this building in 1993 to become a venue for performing arts and films.
