A Fiber Splicer Technician for Patriot Broadband Technologies supports the splicing, terminating, bonding, grounding, testing, and documentation process of all fiber cables within the fiber optic network. For this outside plant role, a qualified candidate will be able to demonstrate proficiency and have experience operating a fiber splicing bucket van/truck, climbing ladders and poles, and has worked with underground fiber cabling. An ideal Fiber Splicer Technician candidate will also have a strong understanding of service operations in the broadband industry and will use effective and professional communication techniques to foster a positive team culture. As an autonomous representative of the company, the ability to troubleshoot and problem solve will also play an important role in the candidate's performance, strength and success within this role. This position is project based and will require travel and overnights throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, Vermont, Georgia, and other business markets as needed.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Use and understand the fiber optic color code
Place both aerial and underground splice closures along with a variety of other closures common to the splicing and termination of fiber optic cables
Read and follow engineers instructions and specifications, maintain the scope of work on the project and adhere to safety procedures
Understand and adhere to customer and company timelines
Use fusion splicing machines (including a mass fusion splicing machine) and operate OTDRs and power meters
Install, repair, and test, fiber optic cables using bucket trucks or by climbing poles or ladders, or entering tunnels, trenches, or confined spaces
Proficient with hot cuts, maintenance window, CO/NOC communications with a tester/MSO technician
Able to connect and rearrange cable facilities per splice documents
Budget-minded behaviors to review and ensure profitability on new, ongoing, and completed projects
Team player that coordinates and communicates activities with other employees, departments, and management
Operates an aerial bucket truck
Troubleshoot and utilize standard OSP tools to include OTDR's, light meters, and signal strength meters
Will travel on a regular and daily basis to meet customer and business needs
Understands and follows all industry standard safety requirements
Take ownership of additional job duties and projects as assigned by the Patriot management team
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Able to distinguish the standard 12-color code system for fiber
When business needs require must have the ability to work overtime, including weekends, holidays, and off hours
Fusion splicing documentation and certification
Knowledge of fiber optic and coaxial cable types, make-ups, and manufacturer specifications
Knowledge of cable testing procedures and test equipment
Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug screening required
Ability to multitask and stay organized under pressure
Able to read fiber schematics along with HFC maps and design prints
High level of professionalism, including the ability to successfully navigate various personalities when working with customers, fellow employees, and the public
A technical degree or equivalent training is preferred but not required
Knowledge of NESC, OSHA, and related state and local codes
Requirements:
Education Level: High School/GED
Experience: 3+ years of relevant job experience as a fiber splicer
Must hold a valid state drivers license and maintain a satisfactory driving record
Must be able to obtain a DOT medical card
Must have the ability to work safely, strictly following safety guidelines working in the vicinity of power, working aloft, and working in confined spaces
Ability to climb both stepped and non-stepped utility poles to access work areas (climbing with gaffs may be required)
Physically able to stand and walk for an 8-hour shift
Able to sit in a vehicle and drive to various locations for extended periods of time
Physically able to push, pull, and lift up to 75 pounds or more
Able to work in all temperatures, climates, and weather conditions
Adequate visual acuity and color perception to accurately perform splicing and other job duties
Ability and willingness to travel as needed
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment for this position may be moderate to loud. All work is outdoors so employees in this position are regularly exposed to outside weather conditions which can include but is not limited to extreme heat and cold temperatures; inclement weather such as rain, snow, sleet, and dust as well as adverse driving conditions including wet roads, icy roads, and fog. Often work will be performed near busy highways and streets.

What you will do:
Under minimal supervision, conducts preventive maintenance, repair, installation, and commissioning and general servicing of systems (including detailed troubleshooting of systems). How you will do it :

Consults with the customer through data gathered and site assessments. Provides field proposals for retrofits, upgrades and or enhancements to existing equipment. Assists sales by providing technical recommendations for sales leads.
Manages assigned work to meet professional and efficient execution of time and customer satisfaction. Reports problems or changes to management immediately. Interfaces with branch manager, service manager, service project manager or subcontractors on projects to coordinate activities as required in an ethical and professional manner.
Provides sketches of field changes and discrepancies for engineering corrections and drawings. May assist with job layouts and bid proposals.
Communicates with customer upon arrival and before leaving the work site. Ensures high levels of customer satisfaction. Meets regularly with customer to become familiar with operating problems. Keeps customer informed on the nature of service provided, outstanding issues and recommends system enhancements, upgrades, and or replacement. Promotes the sale of add-on work.
Adheres to all Johnson Controls and customer safety standards. Provides safety leadership and instruction to all controls technicians in the branch. Provides safety awareness while working onsite with Johnson Controls subcontractors.
Trains the customer in control systems operations. Delivers manuals and documentation to the customer for training needs as required.
Provides mentorship for certification of Controls Technicians and Service Technicians on complex building automation systems. Coaches, supports and trains mechanical workforce on non-complex, non-critical equipment.
Compiles job documentation, such as certificate of completion, customer training form, training certificates and punch lists.
Conducts extensive self-study (reading, research and practice) to improve and maintain technical proficiency in company's product lines. Completes certifications as required by the company.
Other duties related to the installing, commissioning and servicing of building controls and facilities management systems and energy management systems, as assigned.
Assists in the design and configuration of building control systems as defined by the contract documents. Creates flow diagrams, sequence of operations, and bill of material, network layouts and electrical schematics as required.
Assists in the development and testing of software programs necessary to operate the system per the intent of the project requirements.
Compiles and/or completes project as-built and close-out documentation.
Assists in the coordination and creation of necessary drawings and equipment schedules for submittals and installation.
Programming and configuring control systems and devices (such as PLCs, DDC controllers, and variable frequency drives).
Assists in the loading and commissioning of all system and network-level controllers as required. Assists in validation of complete system functionality and troubleshoots problems with subcontractors and other trades to ensure proper operation.

Position Purpose (Summary)

Installs, inspects, operates, and maintains HVAC, and repairs refrigeration, heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and a variety of other mechanical and plumbing equipment and fixtures. Operates, repairs, and programs computerized HVAC system. Responsible for job site and equipment care.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Work requires level of knowledge of the operation, repair and the installation of a wide variety of complex mechanical and related equipment and applicable codes, and the ability to coordinate major jobs and repair work involving skilled workers - acquired through 2 years' progressively more responsible related experience.
Work requires knowledge of refrigeration and air conditioning, mechanical, electrical and electronic theory and equipment, gas-fired and steam boilers, control wiring, pneumatic controls (including their operation and how to troubleshoot them), safety codes, practices and regulations, HVAC BAS systems, ability to read blueprints and schematics, calculate heat and air conditioning loads, pipe sizes and pressures, and interpret chemical test results - acquired through 1 to 4 years of technical training in an apprenticeship, vocational, or community college program following completion of high school.
Must possess CFC (Chlorofluorocarbons) certification within 90 days in position and prior to working with HVAC equipment. 2 years' experience required with MD apprenticeship card.

The pay range for this position is $21.84/hr minimum to $36.10/hr maximum. Pay for this position is determined on a number of factors, including but not limited to, years and level of related experience.
