She played a huge role in calculating key trajectories in the Space Race -- calculating the trajectory for Alan Shepard, the first American in space, as well as for the 1969 Apollo 11 flight to the moon.
As a mission specialist, she became — as you may recall — the first American woman to travel into space on June 18, 1983.
In 1983, McClintock won the Nobel Prize in Physiology for her discovery of the “jumping gene” or the ability of genes to change position on the chromosome.
Jemison served as a medical officer for the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone and Liberia and, when she returned to the United States in 1985, she applied for NASA’s astronaut training program.
She worked for years as a science mission specialist and, on September 12, 1992, she became the first African-American woman to travel into space.
In 1993, Doctor Ellen Ochoa became the first Hispanic woman to go to space when she served on a nine-day mission aboard the space shuttle Discovery.
On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride transformed history when she became the first American woman to fly into space. As a result, she founded Sally Ride Science, an organization dedicated to supporting students interested in STEM. Ride passed away in 2012, but her work continues to inspire young women across the country.
