Jacques’ culinary roots began when his father opened Chez François, an authentic Alsatian restaurant near the White House in Washington, DC, in 1954.
During his first months in New York in 1959, Jacques Pepin didn’t know a single white American chef in New York.
Orenstein started his career in 1961 as owner of Jacques' Internationale at NW 50 and Shartel Avenue in the Shartel Shopping Center.
When the building was sold in 1976, L’Auberge Chez François moved to the picturesques setting in Northern Virginia reminiscent of the French countryside, and today it remains one of the DC metro area’s most popular and recognized French restaurants.
Jacques and Jon Orenstein opened Creative Cookery in Oklahoma City in 1976.
In 1985, the Chicago Tribune credited Julia Child, James Beard and Craig Claiborne with doing more ‘to teach Americans about food preparation than anyone . Today the newspaper might add Jacques Pepin to that list.
That gourmet cooking school stayed open until 1985.
Jacques Pepin and Julia Child were serving up mashed sweet potatoes during a televised cooking show just before Thanksgiving in 2000.
Among the numerous accolades he has received, Jacques was selected as one of the featured chefs at the 2004 Taste of Vail and was the official spokesperson for Thermador’s line of gourmet kitchen appliances.
