RESPONSIBILITIES: Overview: * Repairs machine parts using machine shop equipment. * Interprets drawings, produces sketches of damaged parts, selects proper material and uses appropriate equipment to produce the required repair parts. * Produces new machine parts (e.g. shafts, bushings, etc.) using machine shop equipment. * Inspects, analyses, trouble-shoots and/or rebuilds air compressors or vacuum pumps and associated equipment, referring to manufacturers' drawings and specifications. * Performs regular maintenance checks on various types of non-positive and positive pumps (e.g. adjust packing for correct leakage rate, check lubrication, adjust/install various types of couplings, perform motor and pump alignments, etc.). * Repairs or rebuilds various pumps, utilizing a knowledge of bearing and seal removal/repair/installation, replacement of wear rings, methods of casing repair, and correct positioning of impeller/rotor. Makes adjustments for maximum performance. * Inspects, analyses and trouble-shoots fan and blower problems (e.g. imbalance, incorrect rotation, misalignment, bent shaft, loose rotor, vibration, etc.). * Repairs, removes and re-installs fans and blowers using proper alignment procedures, bearing adjustment, balancing techniques and hub/shaft fits. * Maintains fans and blowers using proper lubrication procedures and vibration checks. * Installs, disassembles, relocates and maintains equipment such as built up or packaged air handling units and associated components. * Inspects, analyses and trouble-shoots chain, "V" and flat belt drives to determine repairs and maintenance required. (e.g. belt turnover, squeal, slippage, and calculate proper ratios and belt speeds). * Performs oxy-acetylene cutting in both straight lines and circles. Performs oxy-acetylene welding, brazing, silver brazing and soft soldering. * Performs shielded metal arc welding (AC/DC), selecting the appropriate electrode, amperage and voltage adjustment in the performance of fillet welds and weaving techniques in flat, vertical and overhead welds. Must also have knowledge in TIG and MIG welding. * Maintains and services hydraulic, pneumatic and vacuum systems and equipment. (e.g. calculate fluid pressures, fluid viscosity, compatibility, lubricators, filters, regulators, etc.). * Performs rigging and hoisting operations in a practical and safe manner. Selects, inspects, installs, operates and dismantles rigging and hoisting equipment. * Commissions new equipment and systems, including pre-start conditions, and monitors equipment during run-in period. * Maintains a thorough understanding of anti-friction bearing and friction bearing, including types and designations, bearing installation, removal, cleaning and lubrication, and analysis of bearing faults. * Installs, inspects and analyses electric motors. * Inspects and performs service maintenance of diesel engines and fuel systems. * Maintains, installs, removes and sets up gear drives, speed reducers, etc. * Prepares foundation and anchoring systems for equipment installation, relocation, etc. * Inspects, analyses and trouble-shoots belt, chain and roller conveyors and performs required maintenance. * Produces and submits drawings and/or changes where applicable to maintain current records of serviced systems/equipment. * Operates a variety of machine shop equipment such as milling machines, lathes, drill press, brakes, shear, lockformer, welding equipment and grinders in addition to a full array of pneumatic power tools and hand tools. * Assists in planning and producing maintenance schedules and inspection programs for related equipment and provides estimates for time and material as required. * Provides on the job training and guidance to new or lower qualified Maintenance personnel. * Maintains all work areas in a safe and clean condition. * Ensures equipment and tools are kept in a clean, lubricated and generally maintained condition. * Under the direction of the Area Supervisor, completes shop requisitions for replacement of shop stock and materials as required. * Ensures that consideration is given to patients and staff by communicating with them when work is to be done in their areas or when services are to be interrupted. Conducts self in a considerate and professional manner in the course of duties. Limits disruptions to patients and staff whenever possible by co-ordinating activities to suitable time periods. * Understands and follows W.H.M.I.S. guidelines, and interprets MSDS Sheets. * Follows all safety and health procedures. * Uses all safety devices and protective equipment as necessary. * Assists in developing safety and health procedures. * Brings unknown or unusual safety and health hazards to the attention of the Supervisor. * Co-operates with the Workplace Safety and Health Committee on all safety and health matters as required * Responds to emergency calls such as Code Red, Code White, etc. as directed * Adheres to all safety and health regulations and safe work practices. * May be required to perform other duties and functions related to this job description not exceeding above stated skills and capabilities. * Other duties as assigned.
