2002

In 2002, a group of riders filed a class-action lawsuit against the MBTA. Four years later, the parties entered into the Daniels-Finegold et al.

2003

MBCR was awarded a contract to operate the Commuter system in 2003.

The Florida Legislature passed legislation transforming TCRA into South Florida Regional Transportation Authority in 2003.

2006

Music City Star connects downtown Nashville to Lebanon in Wilson County, using the rehabilitated freight tracks of the Nashville and Eastern Railroad (NERR). RTA of Middle Tennessee launched the Music City Star in 2006. • FrontRunner.

2008

FrontRunner is a commuter rail system operated by UTA. UTA began operat- ing FrontRunner in 2008 to connect Salt Lake, Davis, and Weber counties with stations in Salt Lake City, Pleasant View, and Ogden in Weber County, and towns in Davis County.

2009

In 2009, Governor Deval Patrick signed legislation that put the MBTA under the jurisdiction of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT).

2010

Capital Metro in Austin, Texas, began operating MetroRail commuter rail in 2010 from Leander to downtown Austin.

2011

DCTA began A-train operations in 2011. • SunRail.

2014

Through two extensions, it continued until 2014 when its contract expired and having lost its bid to Keolis.

2017

The first 43-mile segment connecting Santa Rosa and San Rafael opened in August 2017.

As of August 2017, 31 commuter rail systems provided passenger rail service in North America.

As of 2021, the T is the largest American transit agency to use electricity that is 100% produced from renewable sources.
