In 1990, the panel published a report on Cross-Disciplinary Research in the Statistical Sciences that led to the founding of the National Institute of Statistical Sciences.
Jerome Sacks became the founding director in 1991.
In 1993, the first NISS postdoctoral fellows joined.
In 2000, the NISS affiliates program was created to address challenges arising in government and industry.
In 2002, the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute was funded by the National Science Foundation, and it was partnered with Duke University, North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the National Institute of Statistical Sciences.
In 2005, the NISS affiliates program was recognized by the American Statistical Association with the Statistical Partnerships among Academia, Industry, and Government (SPAIG) Award.
James L. Rosenberger became the director of NISS in 2017.
