Maintain payroll records by collecting, calculating and entering data
Monitor and review time card approval and signoff process, which includes identifying, researching, and resolving discrepancies
Process tip and toke allocations
Process payroll batch entries for commissions, tips, service charges, and incentives
Set up wage garnishments, child support orders, levies, and monitor third party checks
Apply payroll adjustments as needed
Transmit payroll data, load payroll reports, and summary output files

Process manual checks and positive pay notifications

What you'll do:
Payroll Processing
Process accurate, timely payroll for exempt, non-exempt, and shift-based employees.
Validate timecards, hours worked, shift differentials, and project/labor allocations.
Maintain and update pay data and earning/deduction codes in payroll system.
Perform pre-payroll and post-payroll audits to ensure accuracy and resolve discrepancies quickly.
Provide clear, responsive support for employee and manager payroll questions.
Payroll Compliance
Ensure payroll processes follow federal, state, and local wage & hour laws (FLSA, ESST, MN PFML, overtime requirements, etc.).
Monitor changing regulations and help implement required updates to policies, systems, and workflows.
Maintain internal controls around payroll accuracy, audit trails, and documentation of changes.
Support internal and external audits such as workers' compensation audits, financial audits, and grant-related reviews.
Payroll Tax Registration
Manage multi-state payroll tax registrations, including SUI, withholding, and local tax setup.
Maintain agency accounts, tax IDs, rate updates, and electronic filing credentials.
Partner with Finance to review quarterly and annual payroll tax filings and resolve notices or variances.
Monitor tax compliance requirements and ensure that state and local obligations are met on schedule.

Audit and validate benefit enrollments, changes, and terminations in Ben Admin System.
Reconcile payroll deductions against monthly insurance carrier invoices.

Doherty is excited to welcome a new Payroll Specialist into the team at our Edina, MN office. The Payroll Specialist coordinates all activities relating to producing weekly payroll and billing for each operating division in an accurate and timely manner, as well as provides excellent customer service to clients, employees and internal customers.
This position is onsite in Edina, MN, and our hours of operation are Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm.
PAYROLL SPECIALIST MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensures receipt of timecards; verifies for correct hours and approval.
Enters/imports data from timecards into the computer, runs payroll processes and produces checks and invoices.
Enters drug and background charges to customers for billing.
Enters/imports equipment deductions, levies, garnishments and child support deductions.
Ensures proper delivery/mailing of the checks and invoices.
Processes files and documents for internal and external customers using payroll/billing data.
Files all input documents and output reports as required.
Handles busy phones involving inquiries from temporary employees and clients regarding payroll or billing related issues; troubleshoots problems.
Completes employment verification requests and requests for employment information from governmental agencies.
Provides manual W-2 copies to employees upon request.
Guides employees through the Internet to retrieve data from their employee portal.
Responds to miscellaneous requests for documentation from clients and management.
Other duties may be assigned.
PAYROLL SPECIALIST KEY REQUIREMENTS
Experience in accounting, payroll, customer service or call center a plus.
Proficient with 10-key calculator.
Experience using Microsoft Office required - primarily Outlook and Excel.
Strong prioritization and multitasking skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate with employees at all levels, as well as clients.
Must have excellent problem solving and organizational skills.
Able to work autonomously and within a team.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions and percentages.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

The Payroll Technician is responsible for supporting the accurate and timely processing of the City of Minneapolis' biweekly payroll. With 5,000 to 7,000 paychecks issued every pay period, this position plays a critical role in hands-on payroll calculation and ensures compliance with all applicable regulations. Payroll Technicians handle a wide range of duties, including garnishments, tax withholdings, levies, and other complex payroll transactions, contributing to the successful in-house payroll operations for all City employees.
Work Location:
This position may be eligible for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work with some days working remotely and some days working in the office.

* Approve and audit payable time entered via data entry or self-service after verifying accuracy.
* Prepare forms and documentation for taxes, advances, final payments, and direct deposit adjustments, including stopping, reissuing, or creating wire transfers, and notifying employees of changes.
* Use query reports (e.g., compensatory time balances, hours reported) to audit fringe leave balances and support accurate payroll processing.
* Audit HR job data to ensure proper codes and status indicators are present for accurate payroll generation.

Indoor Office Setting Minimum Education:

An equivalent combination of education and highly related experience in a similar environment may be considered.
Selection Process:
The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience (100%).
