Polynesian Cultural Center company history timeline

1963

The Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) is a cultural theme park and living museum owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (aka Mormons). It was dedicated back in 1963 and is a family-centered attraction.

1970

Expansions continued in the mid-1970’s with the addition of buildings including a new 2800 seat amphitheater and the 1000 seat Gateway Restaurant.

1975

A major expansion in 1975 relocated and enlarged the Hawaiian village and added a Marquesan tohua or ceremonial compound.

1979

The following year a new amphitheater, which now seats almost 2,800 guests, was opened and several other buildings were added to the grounds, including the 1,000-seat Gateway Restaurant in 1979.

1990

By the 1990’s the intention of new expansions were to ensure that returning visitors would experience something new each time.

1995

1995 saw the addition of a night show, an IMAX theater, a $1.4 million shopping plaza and the Ali’i Luau dinner show.

1996

In 1996, the Center created the Ali’i Luau, which takes guests on a nostalgic trip through Polynesia with popular hapa-haole hula music while they enjoy traditional Hawaiian luau food and entertainment.

1997

In 1997, the Center was also awarded the ‘Oihana Maika’i Award by the State of Hawai’i for excellence in service and productivity.

2000

Upgrades in the 2000’s continued with new IMAX movies, longer cultural presentations, mini-museum displays of island artifacts and the all-new Hale Aloha building housing the award-winning Ali’i Luau.

2001

The year 2001 brought the start of many changes to the face of the Center, with more than one million dollars in improvements to the front entrance landscaping.

2003

2003Taking All The Time You Need To ExploreOver $1 million in improvements to the front entrance buildings and landscaping were completed for the 40th anniversary in 2003.
