Elementary Program Description
At The Frances Xavier Warde School (FXW), our kindergarten to second grade program is focused on helping young students to develop their academic, social, and emotional skills through a comprehensive curriculum approach. During these grades, we work particularly to build a strong foundation across the core content areas of reading, writing, and math. Most importantly, our teaching focuses on creating child-centered, safe, joyful classrooms that inspire lifelong learners. There are two teachers in each kindergarten to second grade classroom to fulfill these goals while differentiating instruction in a way that is developmentally responsive to meet the needs of all learners.
Primary Function
Operating in this two-teacher model, the kindergarten to second grade teacher is responsible for educating the whole child by providing a quality learning experience to all children in one's classroom. Each teacher assumes full and shared responsibility for all aspects of the classroom. The teacher responds to the needs of each individual child by developing and implementing lessons in all subject areas. The classroom teacher fosters and maintains relationships with students and families, working as partners in each child's educational experience.
Qualifications and Requirements
A bachelor's or master's degree in education.
A valid, issued State of Illinois teaching certificate is preferred.
A master's degree in a curriculum area is preferred.

Under the supervision of the Site Supervisor and assigned Teacher, the Assistant Teacher/Associate Teacher is responsible for adherence to the guidelines of the Department of Health and Human Services, Head Start Education Performance Standards, and for helping assure the quality of developmental experience received by the children.
Will be responsible for meeting the State of Illinois Day Care Licensing Standards.
Participates in an on-going training program to further develop skills in child development.
Work with the classroom teacher, content area managers and staff to ensure appropriate Performance Standards are being implemented in the classroom.
Participates in monthly reflective supervision with classroom teacher.
Essential Functions
Assists the teacher in maintaining a safe and healthy environment that follows the Head Start Performance Standards.
In collaboration with the classroom staff, implements the principles of the Creative Curriculum approach based on a child-centered curriculum that encourages decision-making, cultural awareness, and exploration. Children are provided with choices of learning center activities, large and small groups, and individualized activities.
Helps the teacher to prepare material to be used in the daily program.
Co-facilitate meal service and promote appropriate social discussions and self-help skills.
Helps ensure that all documentation and individualization takes place in a timely manner.
Assist the Teachers with documenting classroom observations for the purpose of collecting data for child outcome assessments.
Assist Teacher in developing and implementing lesson plans.
Under the direction of the Teacher complete developmental and social emotional screenings.
Helps provide a balanced curriculum that encourages social and cultural awareness, exploration, predicting, and testing behaviors, choices of learning center activities, large and small groups, individualized activities, and language development.
Attends the activities of these groups to the best interest of the agency and program.
Have a generally positive approach to other people, to themselves, and to the world.
Helps plan activities and methods for keeping parents interested and engaged in their child's development.
Participates in home visits and parent/teacher conferences.
Works cooperatively with teacher and family development team to maintain good parent engagement.
Works in cooperation and assistance with center staff to assist with food preparation and meal service for children following nutritional and health guidelines.

A high school diploma or equivalent for Teacher Assistant, or Associates of Arts Degree in Child Development with 36 or more hours of college credits in Child Development or related field for Associate Teacher. Prior experience (volunteer or paid) working with children ages Birth - Five years old is preferred.

Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field and PEL certification or signed contingency to obtain; bilingual or ESL Endorsement may be desired based on program needs
1-3 years of experience in preschool/pre-kindergarten required and knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum design and teaching and instruction
