Riverside School company history timeline

1976

Doctor Timothy Thompson bought the house in 1976 when the original family could no longer afford its upkeep.

1978

She was joined in 1978 by Ruth Harris, who helped to introduce the Orton-Gillingham Approach, a core of our philosophy.

1987

In 1987 the Golden Construction Company built a gymnasium and music room addition to our school at a cost of $680,331.

1988

1989

Thanks to the success of the school’s first capital campaign in 1989, the school grew to accommodate five classrooms, 14 tutoring rooms, a kitchen, commons area, central office, and other staff offices.

1993

In 1993, Riverside Elementary School was the subject of the Fairfax County Public Schools cable television channel series Profile.

1996

Riverside began its year long 75th anniversary celebration on September 19, 1996.

1998

As the result of a capital bond issue, a brand new wing consisting of a state of the art library- media center, and three large classrooms was build onto Riverside; it opened in January 1998.

2001

Principal Morton arrived at Riverside in 2001 and two years later led our school through its first, extensive building-wide renewal and modernization.

2002

A new high school wing was completed in 2002 that included technology labs and administrative offices.

The new Rebel Den was built in 2002, which includes a weight training room and other amenities.

2003

The original gym was destroyed by a tornado in 2003 and consequently rebuilt.

2007

Our fundraising, donations, and capital campaigns allow us to continue to grow, and in 2007 allowed us to begin and expanded Teacher Training Program and funding for financial aid.
