San Mar Hope company history timeline

1883

Since 1883, San Mar has served children and families through our residential, foster care and education programs, including the first 44 years of our existence as an orphanage on 355 South Potomac Street in Hagerstown across the street from what is today Locust Point Market.

By 1883 an action plan was implemented as a group of prominent citizens came together to form a new non profit corporation: The Washington County Orphan’s Home.

1918

In a report to the board of managers in 1918 then superintendent, Walter Esmer noted “It was the first successful attempt in the State of Maryland of the people of a county, without state financial assistance, to care for their county’s dependent children.”

1971

SanMar has been doing business this way since Marty Lott launched the company from the basement of a Seattle office building in 1971.

2013

In 2013 San Mar took the lead to reach out to key partners to form alliances to build a Community of Hope, a place where people share a vision of safety and success for every child who lives there.

2014

In January of 2014, Casey Family Programs (Seattle, WA) began a partnership with San Mar to support our shifting priorities towards prevention.
