Scandinavian Communities company history timeline

1932

In 1932 the home was formally ready to receive guests.

1940

Although the Nordic Region remained neutral during the First World War, Denmark and Norway were forced into the Second World War when, in 1940, Germany attacked and occupied both countries.

1949

While Sweden maintained its neutrality, Denmark, Iceland, and Norway jointed the Atlantic military pact NATO in 1949.

1953

From 1953, with Danish Christmas cookies forming a tower- called Kransekaker.

1959

By 1959 it became apparent that more space was needed and a project was begun on a modern facility complete with elevators and other modern conveniences.

1962

Photo taken June 11, 1962 at the opening of the Saint Ansgar Church, 515 Woodford Street (Rosemont Corner). The parish will observe its 50th anniversary at this address in the coming year.

1970

By 1970 the old building could no longer meet the needs of the Home and the decision was made to tear it down so that a more modern South Wing could be built.

1999

After decades of independent operation, these two rest homes merged in 1999 to form what is now the Scandinavian Charitable Society of Greater Boston, the SLC’s parent organization.

2001

In 2001, the Scandinavian Living Center opened its doors as an assisted living residence.
