REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION LEVEL: Registered and Certified in the state of South Dakota and holding a level III South Dakota Certificate, level III NAD certificate, RID certificate, NIC, an individual certified by the department using the EIPA assessment score of 3.5 or higher, or a South Dakota provisional certificate. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The position requires frequent time periods of sitting, standing, walking, and speaking. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES Interpret oral communication into sign language and signed communication into spoken English in general education classes (this may include American Sign Language, Manually Coded English, Pidgin Signed English and/or Oral Interpreting). Facilitate communication among students who are deaf or hard of hearing, the classroom teacher and other personnel in the school district. Provide direct tutorial assistance in areas of academic support. Convey the content of the message clearly and accurately according to the receptive language level of the student. Adhere to the rules of confidentiality required of all school staff. Maintain professional standards as defined in the Code of Ethics of the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Participate in educational team activities either in person or via a report. Activities may include team meeting, Individualized Education Program (IEP) conference, Multidisciplinary Team meetings and/or informal staff meetings. Input from the interpreter is valuable information in regards to communication strategies and progress related to the child's use of the interpreter. Assist in communication throughout the school day as stated in the IEP. The primary function is to act as a facilitator of communication between the Deaf/Hard of Hearing student and his/her educational community, so that the student may actively participate in the educational program. The Educational Interpreter serves as a related service provider on a student's educational team. RESPONSIBILITIES:Precisely and accurately interprets between LEP patients, companions, and providers or other healthcare team members, face-to-face or via remote modalities (such as telephone or video) Provides non-complex document translation services between the target and source languages Shares relevant cultural information with all parties involved and collaborates to the goal of full patient/provider understanding, providing equitable access and healthcare outcomes for LEP patients Maintains strict patient confidentiality in accordance with HHS policies and HIPAAAccurately documents and bills interpreter services provided Maintains basic computer skills to complete job functions using various software, including EMR (Electronic Medical Record) Supports departmental and organizational initiatives around language access by working constructively in a team, participating in program functions, and performing tasks as requested by the department leadership, such as participating in training new team members and in-service training for existing team members as needed Assists with coordination of the deployment of language services, as needed Adheres to National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) medical interpreter standards of practice and code of ethics. Demonstrates honest and ethical conduct QUALIFICATIONS:Minimum Qualifications:High School diploma or GED12 months of interpreting experience in healthcare Enrolled in MDH, Minnesota Department of Health Interpreter Roster40-hour interpreter skills-based training such as Bridging the Gap or The Community Interpreter and successful completion of one of the interpreter competencies tests for spoken languages,(1) Language Line: Interpreter Skills Test or Medical Certification Test(2) Pacific Interpreters: Two test versions are accepted. On Medical Skills Report Level 3, a score of Competent or Outstanding in the categories of "Bilingual Fluency and Conversion Skills" and "Interpreting Skills. " On the Interpreter Readiness Assessment Report Level 2, a score of Competent or Outstanding in the single score category of "Bilingual Fluency and Conversion Skills. "(3) Cyracom's Interpreter Skills Assessment. (4) Or any approved test of healthcare interpreting skills conducted by an independent third-party entity, as they represent a more rigorous level of overall interpreter skills testing.
