Objective:
This position is responsible for serving as an interpreter for a hearing impaired student. The position works with a multidisciplinary team to share beauty, fashion and wellness.
Responsibilities: To effectively interpret between American Sign Language (ASL) and English.To follow the classroom schedule and interpret for student(s) as needed.To interpret in sign language all activities in the classroom and on clinic floor, including but not limited to:

Responsibilities
Provide sign language interpreting services for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing in academic and social settings

Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in interpreting or related field preferred

The Sign Language Interpreter (DHH Educational Interpreter) will assist the Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing to provide services necessary for the educational programming and academic improvement of children aged birth to 21 years with a diagnosed hearing loss as assigned by the supervising Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing. Under the supervision of the Exceptional Children's Director or other designee, and Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing, the educational interpreter assists teachers and offers support in the implementation of instructional activities in the school setting. He/she will use a variety of methods, materials, and equipment at the direction of and in support of the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Facilitates communication between the student and his peers and the student and adults in the school environment.
Studies the lesson content prior to class to ensure an accurate representation of the material.
Tutors students who are deaf or hard of hearing under the direction of the teacher.
Provides feedback to teachers upon request.
Serves as a liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships within the school environment.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Follows all school policies as stated in individual school handbooks. Attends in-service programs and staff meetings as they relate to general information distributed to the faculty, issues that deal specifically with the educational setting, or Interpreter/Cued Language Transliterator development. Teaches interpreting/transliterating classes to students or staff as needed.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Definition The employee must be proficient and certified in sign language and have passed the EIPA. The employee independently or with minimal supervision controls and operates his or her assigned functions. Physical Requirements • Physically performs the basic life operational functions of reaching, standing, walking, fingering, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. • Must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. • Must possess the visual acuity to work with lesson plans, read students' assignments, operate a computer terminal, prepare records and reports, and observe and monitor the behavior of students.

Completion of a 40-hour medical interpreter training program such as Bridging the Gap or ALTA language services.
Demonstrated language proficiency in speaking and listening in primary and secondary languages. Proficiency must be equivalent to Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) skill level 3+ or higher.
Some travel will be required for this role.
Preferred Requirements:
Bachelor's degree or higher.
National certification from CMI or CCHI.
Successful completion of an approved medical terminology course.

Contract Responsibilities:
Provides consecutive, first-person interpretation.
Follows interpreter protocols and procedures as required by Propio L.S. clients.
Follows all Propio L.S. policies and procedures related to information confidentiality and interpreter ethics.
Continuously improves vocabulary and specialized subject matter knowledge, as required for various clients, such as medical, legal, social services, etc.
Requirements:
Submission of updated Resume in English at time of Application.
Completion of English Language Proficiency with a language rating of “technical proficiency” (3 or higher on the nationally recognized ILR scale).
Successful completion of a Mock oral interpretation session. Interpreters are evaluated against 24 quality standards and must attain a passing score.
Completion of Propio's online Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology Assessment, with a passing score.
A full Background Check and Security Screen.
A signed commitment to confidentiality, adherence to ethics, and HIPAA compliance.
Preferred Qualifications:
1+ years of interpreting experience.

POSITION TITLE: Educational Interpreter I (Hearing Impaired) REPORTS TO: Principal, EC Director BEGINNING DATE: Open Until Filled NATURE OF WORK: An employee in this class is responsible for transliterating/interpreting in the classroom or at school-related activities for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Daily directions are provided by the general education teacher and/or the teacher of the deaf. The employee consults with the teachers when problems arise. Errors can seriously inhibit the progress of student learning. Limited supervision is provided.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
* Competence in the communication modality used by the student who is deaf or hard of hearing.
* Competence in English grammar, including syntax, spelling and punctuation.
* Working knowledge of typical language development.
* Strong interpersonal skills in relating to students and adults.
* Working knowledge of subjects being interpreted.
* Understanding of deafness and its impact on language development.
* Skill in expressive transliterating/interpreting at a rate commensurate with conversational speech and class lectures.
* Adequate reverse interpreting/transliterating skill while maintaining the integrity of the message.
* Ability to work as part of an Individualized Education Program team.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
A minimum of Level 3.5 on the Educational Interpreter Proficiency Assessment, licensure from Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID), or a passing score on a state level interpreting evaluation and a minimum of a high school diploma. No prior experience is required. Persons serving as an Educational Interpreter I must annually complete 20 hours of training related to interpreting that has been approved by the local education agency.
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 months
SALARY: Salary Grade 62
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Facilitates communication between the student and his peers and the student and adults in the school environment.
* Studies the content of the lessons prior to class to ensure accurate representation of the lesson.
* Tutors students who are deaf or hard of hearing under the direction of the teacher.
* Provides feedback to teachers upon request.
* Serves as a liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships within the school environment.
* May teach beginning sign language to students or staff.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
* The ability to be physically active, which includes, but is not limited to: standing, pushing, pulling, squatting, bending, sitting, and walking.
* Ability to reach with hands and arms routinely.
* Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds routinely and 30 pounds occasionally.
* Must be able to visually and orally communicate with staff and others.
